Acclaimed lesbian romance Rafiki (‘friend’ in Swahili) was the first Kenyan film selected to be screened in competition at Cannes Film Festival. In Nairobi, Kena is helping her father campaign for a local election when she meets and befriends Ziki the daughter of his rival. This is despite the two young women being opposites - Kena is a tomboy and Ziki a princess. As their relationship deepens, they are forced to choose between openness and secrecy, happiness and safety. This confident and polished film is a brave and ground-breaking work by acclaimed Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu with a fresh and unfussy chemistry between its two leads.
